Chapter 30

The Guise

Sofyross moved a step closer to Cooper and Reid as the environment shifted. However Clair transported them was distinctly different to travel by caelstone, and noticeably smoother than the Kid’s method. Both forms of transportation were far beyond anything he’d experienced. The Kid’s travel felt like he was falling for a split second, whereas Clair’s felt more like swaying, as if they were staying in place and the environment was shifting around them. Sofyross had little evidence to prove Clair’s claim to be Eleva Prime, but her ability to transport the group without the assistance of an empathic object was a power that no mere sentient could possess.

He examined Cooper and Reid with a quick glance. Both had looks in their eyes that had already come to define them in his mind. Cooper was tracing the flight path of his spreeta with his eyes. It had almost pre-emptively jumped off his head to do a lap of the ground floor, before flying upward and circling around the second-floor balcony that overlooked this massive circular room. Reid, however, had a look that landed somewhere between inquisitive and concerned. Reid’s eyes were sharp, and his mind even sharper, enough to assure Sofyross that Reid likely had similar concerns to his own, even if he wasn’t fully able to articulate them.

It took less than a moment for Sofyross to understand what had earned Corsac’s prodigy her reputation. He knew precisely how distraught Stinger was and, even more importantly, how injured she was. Even still, without Sofyross’s decades of training, it would be difficult to tell by Stinger’s stance the pain she was hiding. She was silent, motionless, poised, and had subtly positioned herself optimally to launch into an attack or defence as the environment changed around her. Her instincts and skill were more finely tuned than her peers. She was a brilliant warrior, there was no question about that.

Cooper and Reid, on the other hand, were untrained, inexperienced, and woefully unprepared for what lay ahead. However, in a different time, in a time when his religion fulfilled its tenets, Cooper and Reid would have made wonderful Prolia. All three of these young warriors hid their bravery well, and, much more importantly, had good hearts; for now, that was enough for Sofyross to put his life on the line for all of them.

“Welcome,” Clair said. “This is the storehouse of those who follow me, the Guise. Leyrian and the other members of the Guise know you are here, and will gladly help you with anything you need. I encourage you all to consider this place a sanctuary for the time being.”

The Guise? Sofyross thought. He’d never heard of such a group, although until a few minutes ago he’d never heard of Clair either. Sofyross stepped behind Cooper and Reid and placed a hand on each of their shoulders. His grip was firm, but not tight. “Cooper, Reid, I’m sure this must all be confusing to you. For right now, all you need to concern yourself with is that you are safe.
